Earlier this year in Istanbul I found this postcard, I had no idea who the guy dressed so majestically in those robes and lounging amongst those cushions was. He just looked pretty cool and I liked the photo. Turns out old Pierre Loti was quite the dude. A French novelist and Naval Officer who travelled the world, especially through Turkey during the period at the end of the Ottoman empire. He also wrote a few books, I'm now going to have to track some of them down. He was even given a State Funeral when he died in 1923 at the age of 73. I'd never heard of him before, but I think that's about to change.
