I recently stumbled upon the first picture below and immediately had to know more, and so here is what I learned...
This is the iconic De Bijenkorf building in Rotterdam, Netherlands. She was designed by the Dutch modernist architect Willem Marinus Dudok. It was constructed in one year and opened in 1930 as the Bijenkorf luxury department store, featuring early escalators and stunning glass facades.
Two thirds of the store were destroyed in 1940 from German bombing raids. From then until 1953 the surviving portion was used as a warehouse before it was finally torn down in 1960 to build a new metro station and to redesign the cities roads.
