Another entry from Brian in Ireland, this one taken in south west Donegal.
This one was up north, in south west Donegal, near Killybegs. It was raining and I didn't want to get out of the car, so it's not the greatest shot! It's not the village's only shop, but I managed to crop out the sign that advertised it as a petrol station, shop and pub! All in one! - Brian
Ironically as Brian wasn't wanting to get out of his car due to his apparent phobia of rain, I was doing the same thing in my car this morning, not as a result of rain but my phobia of heat stroke, man I do love my cars aircon.
I asked Brian to translate the sign and he came through with this....
Tabairne Mac Giolla Cearra: tabairne is the Irish for tavern, i.e. the pub. The rest is the proprietor's surname - Mac Giolla is usually translated as 'Fitz' (Fitzpatrick, Fitzgerald), but I couldn't tell you what this particular name is. So essentially it says "Murphy's pub
Pronunciation would be something like: Ta-barn-ah mac gill-ah khee-ar-rah
Then he went on and on about northern Ulster Irish something or other and for fear of him being targeted by certain sections of Irish society I shall refrain from repeating it here ;)
