I've been chuckling a bit this week at the medias infatuation with the fact that they, the media, are no longer the most instantaneous source for news. Websites such as TMZ, Facebook and Twitter spread the news faster than any news service anywhere in the world, the internet now reigns supreme. No longer can a news flash be deemed property of the old school news houses. This was no more pertinent than when Michael Jackson died last week, or was it this week? Or....is....he....even....dead?
I ask because apparently Jeff Goldblum died straight after Michael and Farrah Fawcett, poor old Jeff fell to his death from a cliff in New Zealand. I know this sad piece of news because I tuned into the Today show on CH 9 and saw Richard Wilkins announcing it to all of Australia whilst they munched down on their weet bix. The important thing to note in all of this is that Senor Wilkins and CH 9 were getting their up to the minute info on Goldblums' death from reliable sources on the internet like Twitter. Yes Twitter, you heard right, CH 9 knows who tells it first, they've realised their new place in the pecking order.
However, nobody in the news room thought it would be a good idea to cross check their Twitter sources, maybe call up the New Zealand police and maybe oh I don't know, confirm these reports. But why should they, I mean it's on the internet it must be true. Sigh, this is one of the reasons why I stopped bothering with mainstream media a long time ago, everytime I read a newspaper I can count a bunch of stories there in print that I read on internet news services days ago and not just the topic, I mean word for word text, they've simply copied the story from the web. Ctrl A, Ctrl C, Ctrl V, that's all the skills you need to be a journalist these days.

I was at work when everyone found out about Michael Jackson - we all googled "Michael Jackson death" and the only online source that was reporting death was a Brisbane newspaper - I told everyone to chill the fuck out because Australia media was hardly the most trust worthy source.
fortunately we can always disown wilkins as he's really a Kiwi lol
