TRACEY THORN / OH THE DIVORCES

Tracey is releasing a new album soon and from this track it sounds pretty damn fine. You remember Tracey yeah? Everything But The Girl? Their album Eden was the second best thing I brought home from England with me in 88, the first being an Italian girl called Flora. Ha, the irony of this songs' title and Flora, oh well, at least the lyrics don't relate to her.

WHAT WAS OLD IS NOW NEW AGAIN

I've been on the lookout for old abandoned buildings lately, I think they make for great photos. Driving through Maylands today I remembered the old School for the Blind building and figured I might get a few cool shots of an empty art deco giant. Big surprise to see it all renovated.

maylands 2

I've got no idea at all as to what is planned for it now that it's all fresh again. Judging by house prices in Maylands lately I'm thinking possibly being turned into apartments, but no real sign of that happening yet. If anyone knows drop us a comment.

BREAKING NEWS

I don't usually post news stories but when a cafe in my neck of the woods explodes during breakfast service I have to mention it. Tarts cafe on Lake st is a nice place to drop in for brekky and/or lunch but I'm pretty glad I didn't head there this morning and happy to hear that my buds Waz and Gaz who were heading there for brekky changed their minds last minute. Imagine if you were seated at the table for 2 in front of the window...yikes!! If it wasn't so muggy and hot today I'd cruise down and snap my own pics, instead I'll use the wests one....

Two chefs were seriously injured this morning when a cooking spray aerosol can that was sitting too close to a gas stove top burst into flames.

The male chef and his female colleague were cooking breakfast this morning at the Tarts Café in Lake Street, Northbridge, when they were blown off their feet by the impact of the explosion.

They sustained injuries to their face and hands and were rushed to hospital by St John Ambulance officers.

The impact of the blast, which Perth fire fighters described as a "fire ball" punched a hole through the café's front window sending shards of glass flying across Lake Street.

Customers dining at the café's alfresco area were not hurt.

Perth fire station officer Rick Curtis said the incident proved how dangerous a common household item such as an aerosol can can be when left too close to a heat source.

"We all have items at home and it just shows that we always need to be careful," he said.

Café owner John Vallini said he could not believe what had happened.

"It was a terrible experience," he said.

"There was a loud bang and when I looked up I saw that the chefs had been injured.

"I'm still in shock.

"It is something I never want to go through again.

"It just shows that you can never be too careful."

Witnesses told thewest.com.au they did not hear the explosion but saw people evacuating the cafe.

Shattered glass littered the road as patrons walked from the scene.

PHEW IT'S WARM

It's 10.30 pm and the temperature is only 29.1 degrees C here in the city, no biggie huh? It was an excellent excuse to head down to the Queens Hotel for a few icy cold beers tonight. Pity it's a work night although a sickie tomorrow would be advised as I think it's gonna hit 42 degrees C. Work does have air conditioning though, hmmmmm decisions....

PERTH INTERNATIONAL BEER FESTIVAL 2010

I've been getting quite a few hits on YeLPar by people searching for this years beer festival. Google is still sending them my way following my review of last years debacle. This years was held over the weekend just gone and I had fully intended on going again this year for a comparison but circumstances put paid to that and I didn't make it. I've just done a quick scan of blogs on the web and it seems very few have actually bothered to blog about it, but there are a couple so far.

angel beer sml

The Beer Judges over at The Alcohol Advisory blog had been fairly active on the issue throughout the year and you can update yourself on all of that here. The Beer Judges made it along and they've reviewed it here. It seems it was a vast improvement on last year with just a few bugs to iron out. The pricing being one of them....

"I settled in for a long day with my mates, and was being charged $8 and $9 for a 400mL plastic cup. Some of the Belgian beers were selling at $16 to $18 for the same size. They also had tasting cups which looked like being about 60mL for $1 to $3, and 200mL cups for between $4 and $5, with exception of the more exotic Belgian beers."

That's a bit rich in my opinion and in the words of my mates that did go along....

"....yeah no lines, we walked straight in, beer was cold and they had some nice ones but it was overpriced. Was a good day but prob wouldn't go again. Could do your own pub crawl through the city much cheaper...."

The crew over at Mr & Mrs Hines Adventure went along and they gave it an okay review. The highlight of their post though is the video they've uploaded of the swing ride - why they have rides at a beer festival is still beyond me, I mean what could go wrong right? - well watch the vid right to the end and see for yourself, hilarious.

All up it doesn't look like I missed much and to be honest I'm kinda tainted by last years which took the shine off it for me, it needed to open with a positive impact last year to carry it through to the following years. I'd be very curious to see if they got the 10,000 peeps they had been expecting.

THE TOMMY WISEAU FAN CLUB

If you haven't met Tommy yet then allow me to introduce him to you. Tommy is possibly the greatest actor of all time and his movie The Room, which he wrote, produced, directed and starred in is .... um, brilliant to say the least. It has a huge cult following these days, watch these clips and know Tommy Wiseau.

ABANDONED

I often wonder what will happen to this building in William st. It's a mighty cool pile of bricks in my opinion. But it's being left to crumble, full of squatters and a prime candidate for a touch of arson. I guess then they'll be able to knock it over and develop the lot. So very much could be done with this if you just employed a little imagination....

5 YEARS AGO TODAY - HUNTER S THOMPSON

Has it really been that long....

IF YOU NEEDED GO BEFORE YOU COME

Last night was another last minute call up from friends for dinner and surprisingly 5 of us were available so we hit a nice new Thai restaurant in Northbridge. This little place is so good and so cheap that I had to promise everyone there last night not to name it on my blog for fear of them not being able to get a seat in the future (I never knew my blog held such power). It's quite small and almost always full now anyway so I don't think I'm being mean to the restaurant by not spreading the love. Besides, if you know me then ask in person and I'll share. Such good food and so stupidly under priced you can forgive the haphazard service. We had a ball. Oh and be prepared to drink your wine out of small water glasses, they don't stock wine glasses, but who really cares it's all part of the fun.

One other thing they lack is a toilet. I'm not sure how they ever got approval to run an eating house without separate boy girl rooms but they do have a staff one if you really "needed" it somewhere out back down the lane way a few blocks away....good luck with that.

no toilet

PS: If you know the place already please help me keep my promise by not adding it in the comments

OH SWEET BLISS

"Hello"

"Hey it's Nells, what ya doin?"

"Nothing important"

"Well I'm at the end of your street and I want some dinner and I want some noodles, join me?"

"Yeah cool, see ya in a few minutes"

We had to think for a bit though as we tried to recall a noodle bar in these parts. I can tell you there really isn't all that many. Then I remembered a flyer I got in my letterbox earlier in the week. The place is called Bliss Noodle Bar, with a name like that we couldn't go wrong....could we? We walked into a fairly packed and busy place, with people lining up to pick up their take away orders. The waitress met us and pointed at a table but stated that she would clean it first, almost 5 minutes later we were finally seated.

The menu is pretty diverse, broken down into entrees, noodles, wok fried and grilled dishes. With the noodles you choose your meat and then add one of the many sauces/styles suggested. I went for the Prawns with Kway Teow, Nells chose Prawns with garlic and lemon grass. Now to be fair it does state clearly on the menu that they will be serving you the dish as soon as it's ready so some meals will arrive before others. To me that's okay for large tables, but for a party of two, a party that have ordered very similar dishes, this shouldn't happen. But it did, I scored my meal a good 5 minutes before Nells came out.

I guess it's just me harking back to my days in the kitchen but I could never allow that to happen, it's simple organisation, easily avoided. Keep in mind that most all of the restaurant was already eating so the pressure was off the kitchen....or was it. Whilst waiting for Nells dish I noticed the agitation on the faces of the people waiting for their pick up orders. It was taking longer than it should, moments later I saw one of the waiters go outside and speak to one of two elder gentlemen sitting at a table. This was clearly the owner, he's outside relaxing whilst his business falls into a kind of chaos, hmmmm.

Back to the food, my dish was fine, 8 big prawns, crispy vegetables and nice flavours. My only issue was that there wasn't one piece of flat noodle longer than 4 cm's in my dish. Not much love and care in that dish it seems, they beat the crap out of my noodles. Nells dish also had 8 big prawns, but sadly the rice noodles where entirely undercooked and the dish wasn't that great at all. It was about then that I realised I hadn't been back to Bliss for at least 2-3 years and now I know why.

Overall the place is very disorganised, I'd hate to see it on a really busy night, the owner would do well paying more attention to the kitchen and the floor. The food is hit and miss, where my dish was good Nells was poor. I'm not sure I can be happy with a 50/50 restaurant, can you? Prices were reasonable with each of our dishes coming in around $21.00 which is pretty good for the amount of prawns we were served.

All up not exactly a blissful experience.

NOW THAT'S REALLY REALLY HOT

Lulu has a great job cooking for the crews on survey vessels that cruise around Australia and SE Asia and a few weeks ago they passed by what remains of the West Atlas Oil Rig off the coast of Western Australia. Lulu snapped these pics and threw them onto Facebook. hope you don't mind me sharing them here girl.

Looking at the twisted remains you certainly get a true sense of just how damn hot it was on there. Great pics Lulu.

PORTISHEAD

Have you heard this hauntingly awesome song released late last year by Portishead? Then click play amigos. Then go and pay .99c to download it here at 7digital, all proceeds go to Amnesty International

EDIT: Hmmmm it seems we in Australia cannot download the song at that link.

WAITING FOR THIS

I loved Joanna Newsom's CD Sprout and the Bean and I really disliked her next outing Y, so I'm hoping her new release gets me back to liking her again. I've just listened to her song Kingfisher (all 9 minutes of it) and I'm pretty impressed. The new CD Have One On Me is a triple album and most of the tracks run over 6 minutes and even up to 11 minutes in length. I'll have to preview heavily before I buy though cos I'm still a bit stunned by Y. Here's hoping.

You can listen to Kingfisher here and pre order the CD here
