IT'S SUSHI JIM, JUST NOT AS WE KNOW IT

Forget about your $3.50 frozen crabstick wedged between some soggy rice and seaweed on a tray with glad wrap from your local store. You just entered the grown ups world of sushi, it's serious stuff in here yo. I'd been hearing lots of murmurs about the "new sushi joint down on William st" so time to check it out. They don't take bookings so we rolled in around 7.30pm to a half full room. Would we like seats at the bar where we can watch the chefs prepare the sushi? Why yes we would thanks very much.

As it wasn't all that busy the sushi chef struck up a convo with us almost straight away, he threw some recommendations at us and answered all of our questions, great fun. Our waitress was upon us almost immediately with her iPad menu ordering system thingy and we grabbed a couple of sparkling waters (note they are not licensed if you're after an adult drink). We quickly decided on our dishes and then sat back and watched the chefs go into action, the pics can do the talking for now...

Every mouthful was fantastic, a nice bonus being able to watch your food be prepared and to interact with the chefs. The place has in a small sense a feel of New York about it. As in it's exposed to a busy street, people are coming in and out, a big open space and the place was buzzing. Did I mention that by 8.30 it was completely full? No? Well it was. We had a dish too many and it came to almost $80.00 all up with $70.00 of that being food. Yes it's a tad in the high bracket for what Perth is used to paying for sushi but this is excellent sushi and for that you have to pay a bit more Perth, get used to it.

So there you have it another new bright light in the Perth dining scene and I didn't have a bad thing to say about it....well actually I do. We rolled out of there at 9.15pm and a groovy young couple rolled in, no doubt looking forward to some fab sushi for dinner. Only they got told that the kitchen had closed and they wouldn't be taking any more orders. WAIT! WHAT? It's 9.15pm on a Thursday night, the streets are full of people, you could fill the place over at least one more time. But no, even though it's only been open for a few short months this place is showing signs of what I call perthrigamortis. 

When will restauranters in Perth learn that to create a vibrant dining scene that encourages people to eat out then you're gonna have to stay open after 9pm? It's so frustrating. There are almost 2 million people living here these days, more than enough to fill all of your seats many times, you just have to keep your doors open for longer than 2 hours after the sun goes down.

Let's not end on a bad note though, this is a great place to eat with a great atmosphere and I'll be coming back again and again, just not after 9pm I guess.

7.5 Nigiri out of 10 (serve people after 9 and I'd make that 8.5)

Hi YeLPar, this review has resulted in me calling up my girlies and making a sushi date at Sake (Sydney - you must try if you come visit!) Why can't I read about sushi without immediately needing to have some! I was wondering if I could maybe get some help?
