THE SMITHS

Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want

Good times for a change
See, the luck Ive had
Can make a good man
Turn bad

So please please please
Let me, let me, let me
Let me get what I want
This time

Havent had a dream in a long time
See, the life Ive had
Can make a good man bad

So for once in my life
Let me get what I want
Lord knows, it would be the first time

LOOK UP LOOK AROUND

I got caught in a massive jam on the way home from work today, it started at Canning bridge and crawled into the city. I hate it when I leave work 20 minutes late because this always happens.

jam

So the only solution and I know it sounds crazy, is to go into the heart of the city and avoid the northern crawl. Everyone's leaving the city so enter the void I say and luckily hardly anyone exits up Beaufort st so I get a good run home.

detour

So while I was sitting in traffic I decided to flip out the digi cam and snap a few point and shoots and see how they worked out. Most did pretty well I think. It's funny how you just drive past stuff in the city and don't really notice or take it in....

Like the new versus the old

This place on the Esplanade across the road from Lawsons now houses a really good Chinese restaurant.

ASTRONAUT FOOD

When I was a kid I never really wanted to be an astronaut and now that I've eaten their food I kind of don't want to even more so. Got this package of freeze dried ice cream from a buddy over east a while back so I made it the secret fifth course at the 70's dinner party last Sunday.

freeze dried ice cream

It has the texture of dry stale honeycombe and after it mixes with your saliva it kind of tastes like ice cream. Screw that, give me the real stuff any day, I'd be like Homer Simpson and smuggle the real thing on board.

THAT SEVENTIES DINNER

Fingers crossed this will be one of my last dinner parties at Mary st. The time has come to move on and I've put an offer on a house this afternoon. Fingers crossed they accept and soon I'll own a new mortgage.

So last night I cooked up some 70's inspired food for some of the gang. Man 70's food was unhealthy. For the appetizer we had prawn cocktails, this was followed by a chicken and mushroom vol au vent (naturally). I cheated here and used porcini mushrooms as well, hey my dinner party my rules. Then it was a cray mornay with steamed asparagus and smashed potatoes. Finished off with a jelly, sponge trifle.

STUFF I'M DIGGIN # 4

Wow, take one of my fav bands and mix it with one of my fav movies and you get Talking Heads meets American Psycho. Fisher does a most brilliant Bale impersonation, he has the mannerisms down pat. You actually could be watching the original movie at times and the raincoat walk is vintage David Byrne.

A bit NSFW, but if you've seen American Psycho you'd know that
Miles Fisher's original take on The Talking Heads classic, This Must Be The Place. An homage to the cult classic American Psycho, the video stars Miles Fisher, Lydia Hearst, Charlotte Kidd, and Nick Hobbs.

BEATEN BY THE LOVE BUG

Herbie took me on the freeway yesterday. Wasn't Herbie # 53 though? I love VW bugs, but you hardly see them anymore. Too old now I guess. On long family road trips my sister and I used to play a game which involved screaming "Herbie" at the top of our voice every time we saw a V Dub. There were heaps of them back then, I'm sure our parents loved us playing that game. Doubt it would be much fun these days, maybe you could shout "Commodore"! Hmmmm ....doesn't quite work does it?

PALM OASIS

So I've been doing a lot of driving around my neighbourhood lately looking to see what houses are for sale. Apart from an odd look from some police who I passed 3 times in the space of two blocks (gotta be careful as street walkers do a lot of business near here and the cops ping you if you make too many laps) it's been pretty uneventful.

But I have managed to find a couple of potential places this way and I've seen some places and streets I'd never really paid attention to before including a beautiful secluded park just off Broome st. Across the road from this little park is this house and I'm callin it my fav house of the week - you didn't know I had a fav house of the week thing goin on did ya? - well you do now. Hmmm if the cops had pulled me over and looked through my camera and seen the below pics I probably would have been accused of casing joints to rob em. I probably should rethink this street cruisin plan of mine, maybe do it on foot.

How cool is this place, I love it.

MERRY CLAYTON

Wow

Street Fighting Woman!

Merry was the woman dueting with Mick on the Rolling Stones' original 1969 recording of "Gimme Shelter". Who better to interpret it the following year than Merry herself? She's accompanied on keys by her friend, the immeasurably important Billy Preston, who was as much the Sixth Stone as the Fifth Beatle in these years. The galloping roar of guitar may be David T. Walker, although the album credits don't clarify.

She was born on Christmas Day, and what a gift!

"War, children, is just a shot away/ See the fire is sweeping my very streets today..."
Any resemblence between the events in this video and the present day is entirely up to you...

OH YES I SHOP

Another weekend goes by the by. A strange one for me, I had dinner planned for Friday night with friends until the black death overtook them and it was cancelled. It's okay, I enjoy time with myself, very soothing and besides I got to do some more painting. It's a good feeling to actually get down on canvas something that's been in your head for ages. But then I realised I had nothing planned for Saturday night which was the night I had originally planned to spend quietly for the soothing. So by Sunday I was itchin to do something and see someone. Sunday night saw the clearing of the black death and dinner was served, an awesome greek style leg of lamb with smashed potatoes, roasted capsicum and greek youghurt on the side. Yum.

Expensively though when I'm home alone I tend to shop, mostly online and yeah this weekend was no different. I ordered 3 CD's from the US.

WHY OH WHY DO I DO THIS

For some reason I keep telling myself that going along to watch A League Football is a good idea. Last night I figured it would be extra good as there were two English Premier League sides on display, Fulham and Wolves. Yeah so I thought. LOOK AT THOSE CLOUDS!

wolves

The first game, Wolves v Nth Qld, was about as exciting as watching the opening of parliament. But at least the expected rain held off. Then came the second match, Fulham v Perth. A little bit better and we did get to watch Mark Schwarzer do a 40 minute warm up, sort of reminiscent of the warm ups I did back when I was playing........nah honest, I was a demon warmerer upperer, well for about 4 minutes.

schwarzer

Then the rain came down in truckloads and I looked really sad (with what appears to be a huge head - for the record that's the result of a beanie, a hoodie and then a raincoat hoodie), But I think Daves face there in the background sums the night up and Maccas not even watching the game. So we all made a quick exit half way through the second half of the Fulham match and I managed to arrive home soaked to the bone. Man I love football

FATHER BRIAN MORRISON

I read some sad news today, Father Brian Morrison has copped two types of terminal cancer and probably wont survive the year. Thoughts are that he may have scored a dose of radiation whilst visiting and helping sick children in Chernobyl.

Perth people will know about Father Brian as he's always in the news helping people less fortunate than most, tirelessly helping them in fact. I was lucky enough to be a very small part of his efforts for a few years around 15 or so years ago. I was head chef at Cocos restaurant at the time and every now and then we found ourselves in the position of having too much meat in stock (we did our own butchery there and at times certain cuts would back up) and we needed to do something with it fast. Instead of selling it off cheap we often cooked it up into a brat pan of stew and gave Father Brian a call. He'd whip round in his van as quick as he could and take away tubs of beautifully cooked beef casserole and the like.

I asked him where it was going only once and he answered "Off to the single mothers shelter, it'll feed the mums and their kids, god bless you all for this". Now I'm not a religious guy but I was happy to cop that blessing. What a guy, really he is an awesome guy. I really hope he fights this battle with the same dogged determination that he's used to do all of the great work he's done for so many others.

STUFF I'M DIGGIN #3

I'm loving these photos.

LIFE photographer Gjon Mili visited Picasso in 1949. Mili showed the artist some of his photographs of ice skaters with tiny lights affixed to their skates jumping in the dark—and Picasso's mind began to race. The series of photographs that follows—Picasso’s light drawings—were made with a small flashlight in a dark room; the images vanished almost as soon as they were created.

That these Picassos existed for mere seconds makes them all the more cooler in my opinion. A Picasso that nobody can put a ridiculous price to. More at the link above.

STAY CLASSY PERTH

I revisited Simply Pho last night, it's really so good and so cheap. But last nights highlight wasn't the food, it was the result of this exchange I had with the waiter....

"would you care for an ice bucket for your wine sir?"

"why thank you, yes I would"

....I gotta start going to classier restaurants.
