OLD PERTH # 10

The Dessert Cafe and Timbuktu Restaurant

desert cafe

Pretty sure this place shut down early 90's but up till then it was a very cool place to eat. An artist friend of mine and his studio partner painted all of the Arabian images that adorned the walls. I used to love the Bedouin tent like ceiling inside the Timbuktu section. Anyone else remember this place? It's called the Pony Club now with a building built in front of it. This is not my pic and I really don't remember where I found it, internet no doubt. Oh yeah, they had a life size cutout of Indiana Jones and a TV in the toilet. I remember being there on a double date on FA Cup final night and my mate and I kept going to the toilet to check the scores. We had very understanding girlfriends at the time.

I took a lady friend visiting from Melbourne to dinner here once. I always felt it was a bit too classy for everyday use.
Do you remember Spaghetti Western's interior? They had a desert scene mural all the way around, painted by a local artist. Then the bedsheet brigade moved in and painted it over. And now the building's been massively reno'd, it really is lost forever. Damn.

I remember the spaghetti western place but I never actually went there, not that I can recall anyway

I ate there all the time in the 80's maybe early 90's. Loved it, miss it still.

Any chance you can put up some more old Perth photo's. The ones you've done have been brilliant. Do you have any of the old arcades - Treasureway, Cremorne, etc... I remember that arcade Wanamba (sp?) as a kid as their was a record store downstairs that had the recently released Beastie Boys "Licensed to Ill" lp and I got a Freddy Krueger badge from the Hoyts. Must have been '87 and I was 13.

Oh my God....I've just been going back through your old posts and found this....

I used to go here to have Mummy's Yummy Cheesecake after our Church youth group meetings (that was a LONG time ago). It was worth the drive from Thornlie - a really smooth cheesecake with the unmistakable taste of sweetened condensed milk.

There was also a full-size sarcophagus in the toilet, if I remember rightly.

Yep, back when cheesecakes tasted goooood - can't remember the last time I had a cheesecake and raved about it :(

I think Jeff painted the interior walls with desert scenes ... is that who your thinking of ? He lives in Sydney now and is still one of those amazing artists who hasn't been discovered.

I was thinking of Laurie Smith but Jeff could very well be the other guy
