THEY MAKE EM BIG IN THE BUSH

So I'm quietly cruising the Great Northern Highway last Thursday, on my way to Port Hedland and a big jet that would fly me south and home. Suddenly a car comes speeding towards me flashing its headlights. I check that I don't have my hi-beam on, nup, so I check my speed in case it's the cops ahead. Yep even in the middle of nowhere they'll set up a speed trap. It wasn't, but I was met with this....

All cars and trucks were being told to pull off into a truck bay or stop on the side of the road

and the cops did make an appearance

and then it appeared

This thing was huge, so huge it needed a rig at the front to pull it and a rig at the back which wasn't for pushing, but for braking. Yep the momentum of something this big needed a whole lot of braking power to stop it. Somewhere around 100 wheels on that float btw.

Word on the highway was that it's all parts for a new ore processing facility for one of the iron ore mines in the Hamersley Range and they'd been trucking pieces for the past week. Impressive stuff

OLD PERTH # 10

The Dessert Cafe and Timbuktu Restaurant

desert cafe

Pretty sure this place shut down early 90's but up till then it was a very cool place to eat. An artist friend of mine and his studio partner painted all of the Arabian images that adorned the walls. I used to love the Bedouin tent like ceiling inside the Timbuktu section. Anyone else remember this place? It's called the Pony Club now with a building built in front of it. This is not my pic and I really don't remember where I found it, internet no doubt. Oh yeah, they had a life size cutout of Indiana Jones and a TV in the toilet. I remember being there on a double date on FA Cup final night and my mate and I kept going to the toilet to check the scores. We had very understanding girlfriends at the time.

365 DAYS WEEK 41

Week 41 of my 365 Day Challenge was spent entirely in the wide open spaces on the Pilbara looking at awesome rock art

GOOD TO BE BACK HOME

....to a town where there is more food than plate sized T Bone steaks topped with fried eggs (The Truckers Special) and Hamburgers done 10 different ways on offer. This has been my culinary option for the past week as I had to camp at the Auski Roadhouse. The rooms where fine but the food, oh god you should have seen the fruit and vegetables I bought at the shops on the way home from the airport last night. Detox starts NOW!!

Breakfast at Auski, such a pleasant way to start the day, thankfully they also had cereal and toast because this was inedible....

mmmm crusty wrinkled and dried out fried eggs

So I tried one of the burgers on day 1 and I asked for cheese as an extra, I got 4 slices of kraft singles whacked in there. Had to laugh at that one, I wasn't laughing by the 6th day.

I'm thinking I wont write a review of this for urbanspoon

NOT SO BEIGE

We arrived in Port Hedland late yesterday afternoon and found that we were staying at a different motel than the one mentioned in the previous post. As soon as I opened the door I saw the beige....

beige

but then I looked up and saw this

room

which even though the colour scheme of purple and lime was a bit OTT it sure was a nice change from florals and beige. The bathroom was clearly channelling 80's hyper colour/pastels.

colours

and the plastic chair just got funky

and the view when I woke up this morning was pretty nice. I'll be looking at these pics often over the next week whilst I'm staying here.

WHERE DO YOU GO TO MY LOVELY

....when you're alone in your head? Time to head back to the dusty dry hot north west very shortly. Spent most of today running around with various errands. I always leave everything to the last minute, you'd think I'd learn by now. I'll be spending one night in the luxurious surrounds of the Four seasons Motel in Port Hedland, remember this place? All kinds of sixties/seventies beige and florals. Word on the street is that it's been glammed up a bit. I'll report back on that when I get there.

gear

But for the most part I'll be staying at a remote roadhouse called Auski, which is here, there's not a whole lot to at the Auski roadhouse and seeing as there's no internet or phone coverage I guess i'll be watching a fair few DVD's.

Meanwhile I need to choose a hat

LISSIE

Another new find, this girl can sing

...having a grandfather who was an international barbershop quartet champion, having a great-grandfather who was a train-jumping hobo on this famous Rock Island Line (the Cash song of the same name Lissie has played in hometown gigs), a father who delivered her at her birth, getting kicked out of high school, selling honey for living money upon coming to LA and an inability to separate herself from this Midwestern city where many just raise their families, get fat and die satisfied.

She lives by herself, with her dog, in a farmhouse in Ojai, Calif., where she tends to drink wine and will, on a whim, go to the store to buy paint for her rocks so she can construct a medicine wheel in her big backyard. She has all the time to listen to what's happening in her inner chambers, what's turning on and off her lights, what's giving her goosebumps and where she thinks she'll be led tomorrow.

SHE'S GOT BIG BOWLS

Apologies to all ACDC fans

Just a quick review of a nice new noodle house you should check out in William st called simply the Big Bowl Noodle House. It's your stock standard beige fit out, cold atmosphere, Asian eatery of which there are lots in Northbridge. Not sounding all that good huh, well there's something that makes this place stand out from all the rest....it's fresh noodles. Made on the premises using those 3 big machines with the flour tubs on top of them in the pic below.

Big Bowl Noodle House

We chose a couple of grilled chicken noodle soups and a stir fried noodle dish with dried beef. The soup was fine once you added a few spicy condiments and the chicken freshly grilled but the big winner is the fresh noodles. They make such an awesome change from the standard dried packet versions. You chose the type of noodle you want when you place your order at the counter. It's all very simple and a great spot for a quick meal. I imagine lunch is packed in here. Oh and make sure you don't turn up after or around 8.30pm cos that's when they close....hey it's Perth, what were you expecting? We can't all be like Melbourne with their fancy smancy 9.30pm closes....sigh.

The lows: 8.30pm "get out"

REPRESENT 1951

This post is all about my dad. I never really knew my dad all that well as he died when I was 12, but every now and then I find some info about him and it's a very very cool feeling. This morning I scored big time, I found a copy of his team photo from when he represented Western Australia in the 1951 Australian State Schools National Football Carnival or State Schoolboys as it's called now. I'm feeling pretty awesome at the mo as I've been searching for this for ages. I also found a bunch of other stuff to go with the pic....

The next 4 pics I've had for sometime....
