HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR FREDDIE

As most of you who have used google.com today know it's Freddie Mercury's birthday. If you haven't watched the google doodle yet make sure you do it's very cool...

edit: just found this on youtube

I was never a huge Queen fan, they were massive in the 70's which is way before my time, but I and a gazillion other people really took notice of Freddie and his band on the 13th of July 1985. That was the Live Aid gig and we like everyone else who wasn't at either the London or Philadelphia venues was having a party at their house or going to one elsewhere. Act after act came on and we sort of paid attention to the live feed on the TV, but mostly it was a party and we were there to drink and have fun. To enable us to be guilt free for partying during what was basically a telethon for the starving in Ethiopia, we also collected a pile of money for Bob Geldof and co.  So like I said we were just partying along when all of a sudden everyone in the room stopped and turned to the TV. Queen were on....

Anyone who knows much about music will have heard of Queens legendary performance at Live Aid and you'd be allowed to maybe brush it off as people hyping up a nice memory or similar, but as one who saw it live I have to say they were 100% right. We were stunned, not even fans, yet to watch Freddie work 80,000 people in that stadium and have complete control over them was something none of us had ever seen before. We were quite literally struck silent in awe. If you don't believe me take the next 25 minutes to watch this vid or the shorter condensed version in the vid below (which will just make you want to watch the longer one anyway) at the very least come in at 7.03 and watch a most amazing moment....

so yeah happy 65th birthday mr freddie

*Finally* remembered to watch this tonight. So much energy, yet so effortless and natural on Freddie's part.

I can only imagine what it would've been like to watch it happen live on TV. I envy you!

Oh, and thanks for posting it :)
